About the film:
When 15-year-old Mary Baker died by suicide, her parents embarked on a journey to shine a light on the darkest night of their lives. ‘Solstice’ is a hopeful, determined, optimistic story of change that can emerge from a heartbreaking tragedy. Beginning with the level of Mary’s parents, Annette and Stuart Baker, the film expands out to journey through Australia and across the globe, documenting the stories of those who are daily on the frontline in the battle for better mental health care – the survivors of suicide. This film bravely steps into the gaping hole left when a person dies by suicide to begin conversations, unite communities and ignite positive change.
About the safe space:
The Blue Mountains Safe Space for Suicide Prevention Inc. is a registered charity providing an evening walk-in site in Katoomba designed to help people experiencing suicidal crisis. Guests will be welcomed and met with face-to-face, non-clinical support from trained volunteers who have their own lived experience of suicide. It is a place where guests can reduce their emotional pain and distress to keep themselves safe in their chosen ways, living through those moments alongside the comforting support of others who listen, respond, and care.
We are seeking volunteers to join so the space can open this year and encourage registering interest via our membership form. We ask the community to please consider assisting with the promotion of our cause or financially with a donation on the night.
